Notes on this week's program:

-- I introduced the mp3 delivery machine (my Thinkpad) to the program, and it brought the soundtrack to "Danger: Diabolik" to the airwaves. Fun fun fun. I think I got the hang of it, although the sound was definitely mediocre. Great for background music, particularly with the auto-'crossfade' built into Winamp 3. The bits of dialogue from the movie interspersed throughout the soundtrack did distract me, I must say, but I didn't really mind because I found them quite amusing. I must see that movie, a late 60s spaghetti anti-Bond movie about an arch-villain named Diabolik, who sorta looks like Batman.
-- I got a bunch of older Ikara Colt singles from Action Records in the UK, and the alternative version of May B 1 Day on the double-7" Basic Instructions EP is pretty great. All of the b-sides are pretty good, actually.
-- I liked the Pel Mel [not Pell Mell] track I played from that new Sydney Post-Punk comp, Skewed Melody.
-- Bulb Records is damned nuts. Vide Mind Flayer.
-- Ivy Green really is great. Wish I could find that double album.
-- The unintentional duet of Tom Waits and the new Throwing Muses actually sounded remarkably intentional. Someone even called up and complimented me on it. Go figure. It helped that the songs were in the same key and Waits sang mostly during the instrumental parts of the Throwing Muses song.
-- Gabor Szabo (Hungarian psych-jazz guitarist) was brought to me during the show by a Greek bearing gifts--my friend Nick, who used to do a show on WPRB a few years ago. Thank you, Nick!
-- The Joe McPhee Quintet cut was really a bass solo by Michael Bisio--and it was inspiring.

Notes on this week's program:

-- "Let's get it like it done was..." (The Gibson Bros.)
-- Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartments - how come I never paid attention to this band? I am an idiot.
-- The Steve Lacy I played today was with Derek Bailey and recorded in 1975. It's part of the rather inexpensive Scratching the Seventies box of Saravah recordings, and it was on a disk that I had not listened to before. Silly me! It's crack.
-- New Cat Power is a gem.
-- Patty Waters was for Brian Farmer.
-- I thought the Beastie Boys song was simplistic, and it is. But then I couldn't stop listening to it. One of them sounds like he's smoked a few packs too many.
-- I actually enjoyed the ambient track by Susuma Yokota.
-- Horace Tapscott = most under-recorded and ignored post-bop piano master.
-- Laughing Clowns were Ed Kuepper's post-Saints band. I want to hear everything they did, for what I do have is maravilloso.

Notes on this week's program:

-- Flamenco Funk? Whose idea was that?
-- My vinyl version of "Under My Thumb" sounds better than anything a CD snob could throw at me. Plus, if we get into a throwing war, vinyl is a lot heavier.
-- Negativland's "Car Bomb" is still utterly crazy. That album also stands up as their best.
-- My second set was inspired by a demon from the lower circles.
-- Thermals sound exactly like older Guided By Voices. I used not to like GBV, though, and I like this. Maybe I've changed.
-- D4 = Mooney Suzuki
-- I really like the Operators CD. Kinda Scrawl with a bit more No Wave at times, Go-Betweens at others. Speaking of which, the new Go-Betweens is actually growing on me.
-- I must hear more of the Baptist Generals CD.
-- Sun Ra small group records are overlooked gems.
-- Josh Wise of French Kicks (and former WPRB DJ) requested The Fall. Thank you, Josh.
-- I almost missed out on the Rogers Sisters CD. Another Troubleman hit.

Notes on this week's program:

-- I'd never heard that Clean song, Ludwig. Damned weird.
-- Did anybody catch those lyrics to "Funky Butt" by Mississippi John Hurt?
-- That Townes Van Zandt song was almost as perfect as the Willie Nelson. Reminded me of the desperate vocal quality in the Johnny Thunders acoustic record, Hurt Me, which I will play this week. Also, I wonder if Springsteen listened to much Townes. Sounds that way.
-- Azita really is superb. As is Angels of Light.
