Notes on this week's program:

-- Pick of the week: Functional Blackouts. "Stamp Out Techno" is an anthem for the ages--an updated "Death to Disco." Even sounds like late 70s punk rock, only better than most.

-- The Dipers feature two of the three A-Frames. Both bands were recorded by Sacramento's Chris Woodhouse, who is also in FM Knives. The Dipers play rougher and dirtier. The A-Frames continue to spark a flurry of phone calls.

-- That "Humpty Dumpty" song by The Epics is a true lost garage classic.

-- I picked up the three debut CDs from a new label, Sublime Frequencies, co-founded (I believe) by Alan Bishop of Sun City Girls. The first three focus on Indonesia (Sumatra, Bali, and Java). There are also two DVDs (on Burma and Morocco) that I hear are great. Their website's description of the label pretty much sums it up: "SUBLIME FREQUENCIES is a collective of explorers dedicated to acquiring and exposing obscure sights and sounds from modern and traditional urban and rural frontiers via film and video, field recordings, radio and short wave transmissions, international folk and pop music, sound anomalies, and other forms of human and natural expression not documented sufficiently through all channels of academic research, the modern recording industry, media, or corporate foundations. SUBLIME FREQUENCIES is focused on an aesthetic of extra-geography and soulful experience inspired by music and culture, world travel, research, and the pioneering recording labels of the past including OCORA, SMITHSONIAN FOLKWAYS, ETHNIC FOLKWAYS, LYRICHORD, NONESUCH EXPLORER, MUSICAPHONE, BARONREITER, UNESCO, PLAYASOUND, MUSICAL ATLAS, CHANT DU MONDE, B.A.M., TANGENT, and TOPIC." Tune in for more from these in the coming weeks.

-- I really should play the Louvin Brothers more often.
