— This show was enormously fun. First off, I had never listened to King Sunny Ade before, and that now seems unimaginable. It also means I didn’t know SQUAT about juju music. I guess I still don’t, but I’m about to learn. How I could have listened to so much Fela Kuti and no King Sunny Ade is a mystery. This shall be corrected.

— A disco set!!! YES, a disco set!!! Don’t count on that happening again anytime soon, but I have zero regrets, especially since I turned it into a Euro disco set, with the German ice-queen Gina X Performance, Italy’s Black Devil Disco Club, and the more contemporary German 2raumwohnung, who are remarkably huge in their homeland and so overlooked elsewhere. That’s what you get for singing in German. Their records are really catchy, though, and they simply sound great. Marvelous production.

— Third set was mostly chicks in punk rock, and that also made me very happy. Neonbabies were the late-70s/early-80s German New Wave (Neue Deutsche Welle) band featuring singer Inga Humpe, who is now one-half of 2raumwohnung. Kleenex were a classic Swiss girl-punk band from Zurich, who had to change their name to Liliput because of trademark problems (go figure), so look for the Liliput compilation for that stuff.

— I played two great Ennio Morricone soundtracks today. The first was for Danger: Diabolik, the 1968 James Bond spoof that has the dubious distinction of having been the very last target of Mystery Science Theater 3000, airing in 1999. The second Morricone soundtrack, Days of Heaven, was one I discovered by chance this week while watching the film. I really enjoyed the film, despite Richard Gere, and the music is gorgeous and lush. The soundtrack is hard to find though, as it’s oddly paired with the Clint Eastwood film, Two Mules for Sister Sara.
