Notes:

– Did you know that the venus flytrap was native only to the Carolina shore?!!! What a great album cover for a Carolina funk compilation! The liner notes are superb, and I was thrilled to find out the music is as well. I played a track from an obscure Asheville band, Innersouls, who used to play at the Orange Peel back when it was a black social club. I was impressed. Kudos to UK label Jazzman for putting this together.

– ST Mikael is a bedroom psych artist from Sweden who mostly recorded in the early and mid-90s. I always thought the artist name was a reference to a saint, or simply his initials, but I discovered another clue this week: there was a famous shipwreck in 1747 of a Dutch galleon called the S:T Mikael off the coast of Finland on course to St. Petersburg. Recent excavations have brought up much much booty. Back to the psych record–I found a copy of the 1996 Xotic Minds double record Soul Flower in London a couple of years ago, but I was living in Zurich at the time and asked my bud Nick to carry the thing back to the States with him, only to have it languish in his storage space until we could meet up in DC a couple of weeks ago. But now I have it in my grubby paws (mad, maniacal laugh)! Evidently, according to the Subliminal Sounds website, ST Mikael has just put out his first record in 11 years. Very nice.
