Notes:
– The Numero Group record label dominated the first portion of this radio show. Known mostly for their Eccentric Soul compilations of neglected soul scenes and labels (mostly from the 60s and 70s), they’ve quietly produced a full catalog of other gems, particularly on their * (asterisk) imprint, dedicated to re-issues of long-lost albums. I played the Propinquity record from that series last week, but this time I got in the Johnny Lunchbreak record (Velvet Underground worshippers from mid-70s Connecticut) and the most recent release, the self-titled album from the Chicago soul-jazz outfit, Boscoe. I also played one of the two CDs in the Cult Cargo series of "panAmerican funk," namely Belize City Boil-Up, which is surprisingly consistent in its jammy excellence. The other Numero offering offered today was by the samba-obsessed, early-80s Belgian band, Antena, who also sound as if they could be on Rough Trade records alongside the Young Marble Giants.
– My beloved Aunt Sandy gave me a huge pile of records that will no doubt take me ages to sift through, but I got a start today with three: 1) the Sylvers, the Memphis version of the Jackson 5; 2) the 5th Dimension, which had Shaina and me wincing, mortified by the saccharine "Up, Up and Away"–until WPVM’s Dr. Awesome (listen Wednesdays, 2-4 pm) popped his head in the studio and said he loved this record, allowing us to lose our shame (while still writhing in pain); and 3) the blue-cheese-of-cheesy 1910 Fruitgum Co., who essentially defined bubble gum pop (at least we didn’t play "Goody Goody Gumdrops"). Hey, the Ramones loved this record, so there.
– The Eddy Current Suppression Ring from Melbourne, Australia, put out their debut record a couple of years ago, but I just now got around to giving them a listen, and oh man, is it a delightful discovery. That is one bitchin’ rock band in the grand tradition of the Saints, Radio Birdman, and The Victims–just to name a few Aussie faves. I haven’t heard their new one, Primary Colours, on Aarght! Records, but it’s on my must-buy-asap list.
